Debunking Venezuelan Celebration Footage and AI-Generated Pictures of Maduro.
AI-generated graphics purporting to show Venezuela's president detained after his apprehension by the United States have garnered tens of millions of impressions online.
How AI Images of the President Appeared Soon After
The first fake AI image seemingly displaying him taken off a aircraft surfaced shortly after. The picture was unpublished by any verified American sources; it was instead posted on the platform X by an account describing itself as an “AI video art enthusiast”.
Our analysis used an AI-watermark detector, determining the picture was created or altered with generative AI.
More synthetic visuals began to spread in the subsequent hours, purporting to present additional perspectives of Maduro under guard. Visible logos on these images reveal they came from an Instagram profile named ultravfx.
The detection tool says all of these pictures were similarly produced using Google AI.
Real Photo Posted but Fabrications Continued
The former US president released the first real photo of Maduro restrained aboard the US Navy ship on Saturday morning. Yet following the authentic image was released, synthetic images persisted online but were altered to show the grey athletic wear seen on Maduro.
Reverse image searches indicate these altered fabrications were first posted on the video platform by a graphic design profile. Again, the AI-watermark detector confirms these further images were produced with Google AI.
Important Facts:
- Deepfakes spread rapidly after the news of Maduro's capture.
- The initial fabricated image appeared within hours on platform X.
- Detection software like Google’s SynthID were used to verify the images as inauthentic.
- Fake images persisted to circulate and evolve despite the release of authentic photographs.
- The source of several fabricated images was linked to specific online profiles dedicated to graphic design.
