The Year 2026 Declared the Age of the Croaking Craze.
While I found the recent developer-focused presentation was undoubtedly entertaining, my biggest takeaway was perhaps unexpected: I am declaring that 2026 will be the peak period for frogs in video games.
A surprising total of five of the featured titles—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—incorporate these amphibious creatures. Considering a band of frogs is called an army, it appears they are taking over the industry.
A Legacy of Leaping
Amphibians have been far from new to the interactive entertainment. Looking back at titles like Frogger to the beloved froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have long held a niche presence. But, their popularity has noticeably surged in recent times.
A cursory search for "frog game" on Steam unveils an overwhelming flood of results. Although, some of these are obscure titles, a sizable number are legitimate titles centered on frogs.
Charting the Croak Comeback
To grasp this rise, I performed a deep dive into the recent history of frog-related gaming on Steam. My approach was based on clear indicators, focusing on games with frogs in the title or prominently displayed in screenshots.
The data tell a compelling story: a consistent increase from under 20 titles in 2020 to nearly 60 in 2025.
This notable escalation prompts the question: what's driving this craze? The creature's elevated place in the cultural zeitgeist is partially evident elsewhere, such as the popularity of Frog and Toad as beloved characters. Yet, the explosion in gaming looks especially pronounced.
Why Frogs? The Game Design Advantage
In my opinion, this is a shift I can wholeheartedly support. Frogs have built-in design advantages for game developers.
- Unique Characters: They are ideally shaped to be designed as quirky characters that often become a standout feature in any game.
- Innovative Systems: Their elastic legs and sticky tongues enable a wide array of innovative control schemes.
Several the announced projects directly leverage these traits. For instance the tongue-grappling in Big Hops and the extra-long limb puzzles of Stretchmancer.
What the Future Holds
So, what can we expect in 2026? With five frog games confirmed for release before the year has even begun—and the possibility for more—the evidence suggests for it to be the most significant year so far.
Should these games are received positively—and historically, games from this showcase tend to succeed—we may indeed be witnessing a true amphibian entertainment revival.
